Bio

Born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, Jill Smith always had an interest in art and design. After receiving a BS in Interior Design at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1986, she practiced Interior Design and Architecture in Minneapolis, MN for almost 20 years before transitioning from what was originally a hobby, to full-time jewelry artist in 2003. Given her background, JillÊ¼s jewelry is constantly influenced by architectural and industrial spaces. Imaginative and often times whimsical, JillÊ¼s asymmetrical compositions evoke irregularities we experience in our everyday environment, accentuating pieces with colorful stones, giving Jill her signature look. Jill finds inspiration in a variety of places. "Often it is the materials themselves that can be inspiring, the parts and pieces sitting on my work bench. Other times itÊ¼s something that I experience outside of my studio. My real passion is to take objects and forms that are not normally seen as jewelry and transform them into reinterpretations that are wearable and interesting". Jill currently has a studio in her home in Minneapolis and works with a variety of local and regional galleries, retail stores and specialty gift shops such as Gallery 360 and the Guthrie Theater both in Minneapolis, and Calico Skies Winery in Inwood, Iowa.
